Back pain is not a diagnosis in itself. It is a symptom, and the underlying cause matters a great deal when it comes to how it should be managed. Common presentations we assess and care for include facet joint irritation, disc-related complaints, muscle and ligament strains, and postural loading problems. Occasionally, back pain can be referred from elsewhere in the body, which is one reason a thorough history and examination is so important.
Common contributors to back pain
Prolonged sitting or sedentary work habits
Sudden or unguarded movements
Poor lifting technique or repetitive heavy loading
Trauma or a specific incident such as a fall or accident
Postural strain from sustained positions
Pregnancy and the physical changes it brings to the pelvis and lower back
Underlying joint or disc changes
How we approach back pain at Synergy
We do not begin care at your first visit without understanding what we are treating. Your initial appointment includes a comprehensive history, a thorough physical examination, and an explanation of what we find before any care begins.
Where appropriate, this may include assessment of neurological function, orthopaedic testing, and a discussion of whether further investigation such as imaging is warranted. We will always explain our findings in plain language and walk you through the options before proceeding.
Care is then tailored to your specific presentation and goals. Our chiropractors use a range of approaches including manual therapy, low-force techniques, activator methods, and soft tissue work, depending on what is most appropriate for you. We also offer low-level laser therapy, which can be useful for certain types of back pain, particularly where there is soft tissue involvement or inflammation.
Helping you beyond the treatment room
Addressing back pain in the short term is only part of what we do. Where relevant, we will provide guidance on posture, movement habits, and rehabilitation exercises designed for your situation. The aim is to help you understand what is driving your problem and give you the tools to manage it effectively long term.
If you have been putting up with back pain and are not sure where to start, we would be glad to help. Your first appointment at our North Canberra clinic is a full hour. We take the time to listen, assess thoroughly, and give you a clear picture of what we find. Request an appointment with one of our chiropractors today.
