Thorough assessment and personalised care at our Macquarie clinic
Neck pain is one of the most frequent complaints we see at our Macquarie clinic. It can present as a dull ache, a sharp catch on movement, or a persistent stiffness that makes it difficult to turn your head. Sometimes it arrives alongside headaches or pain that radiates into the shoulder and arm. In all cases, a proper assessment is the starting point.
Are you experiencing any of the following?
Stiffness or limited movement in the neck, particularly when turning your head
Aching or tension across the upper shoulders and base of the skull
Pain that worsens after prolonged sitting, screen time, or sleeping in an uncomfortable position
Headaches that originate from the neck or base of the skull
Pain, tingling, or numbness that travels into the shoulder, arm, or hand
A feeling that your neck needs to click or release
Tenderness along the sides or back of the neck
Neck pain does not always originate where it hurts. The cervical spine, the joints at the base of the skull, and the muscles and connective tissue surrounding the neck are all closely connected, and a problem in one area can refer symptoms elsewhere. This is one reason we do not rely on the location of pain alone when assessing a new patient.
Common contributors to neck pain
Sustained postures, particularly prolonged screen use or desk work
Sleeping positions or unsupportive pillows
Stress and associated muscle tension
A sudden movement or trauma such as a whiplash-type incident
Carrying heavy loads on one shoulder
Cervical joint or disc changes
How we approach neck pain at Synergy
We begin with a thorough history and physical examination before any care takes place. Where appropriate this may include assessment of joint mobility, muscle function, and neurological screening. We will explain what we find in plain language before proceeding with anything.
Care is tailored to your presentation. This may include manual therapy, low-force techniques, soft tissue work, or a combination of approaches. For patients with significant muscle tension component, low-level laser therapy may also be considered.
Beyond the appointment
We will talk you through any lifestyle or postural factors relevant to your specific situation, and provide guidance on movement and self-management where appropriate. The goal is not only to address the current episode but to reduce the likelihood of recurrence.
If neck pain or stiffness has been affecting your day-to-day life, we would be glad to help. Your first appointment at our North Canberra clinic is a full hour with no guessing and no rush.
