Sciatica Chiropractor North Canberra
Thorough assessment and personalised care at our Macquarie clinic
Sciatica refers to pain, tingling, or numbness that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve, typically from the lower back through the buttock and down one or both legs. It is a symptom rather than a diagnosis, and the underlying cause can vary significantly between patients. At Synergy Chiropractic Centre in Macquarie, we take the time to assess what is actually driving your presentation before doing anything.
Are you experiencing any of the following?
Sharp, shooting, or burning pain that travels from the lower back into the buttock or leg
Numbness, tingling, or a pins-and-needles sensation down one or both legs
Weakness in the leg or foot
Pain that worsens when sitting for extended periods
Discomfort that eases when lying down or walking, but returns on standing or sitting
A dull, constant ache deep in the buttock
Symptoms that are worse on one side than the other
The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body, and irritation or compression at different points along its path can produce different symptom patterns. Common sources include disc-related issues in the lumbar spine, piriformis muscle tension in the buttock, and facet joint changes. Identifying the most likely driver of your symptoms is the purpose of the assessment.
Common contributors of sciatica
Lumbar disc irritation or bulge
Facet joint dysfunction in the lower back
Piriformis muscle compression of the sciatic nerve
Prolonged sitting or sedentary periods
Lifting or twisting movements
Pregnancy-related pelvic and lumbar changes
How we approach sciatica at Synergy
Assessment includes a thorough history, orthopaedic and neurological examination, and discussion of whether imaging or further investigation is warranted. We will explain what we find and what the options are before beginning any care.
Care is always tailored to the specific presentation and underlying driver. Depending on what we find, this may include manual therapy, low-force techniques, soft tissue work, and rehabilitation guidance. We monitor your response carefully and adjust accordingly.
If you have been dealing with leg pain or sciatic-type symptoms and are not sure what is causing them, we would be glad to help work it out. Your first appointment is a full hour at our North Canberra clinic.
